I wouldn't know what to advice, myself I use Reason predominantly (an older version) but also there I haven't been doing anything lately. I do know it is not the software persay, it is more that you need to know what you want to do beforehand. Maybe the more basic thing is to search for a program which lets you work with loops, since then you do not have to make your own basslines and drumrhythms et cetera. Why? Because there are basically two steps: [1] create a tune and [2] mixing it.

For step [1] you need to have some basic knowledge about chords and thing, in step [2] you can play a bit with the different instruments by putting them in and out of the mix. I do not know how much you know about musical stuff like chords and thing.

I don't know if this helps, frankly I doubt it, but it's the best advice I can give at this time...
